COMPETITION MECHANICS

Main Competition

  • LAUNCH DATE: 16 January 2010
  • 12 week public competition
  • Ideas must be submitted on www.makeitso.org.au
  • One idea will be chosen as the winning idea.
  • Engineers Australia will coordinate engineering the winning idea
  • CLOSE DATE: 15 May 2010

Weekly Public Competition

  • By submitting a valid entry into the Competition, entrants will also be automatically entered into the Nova ‘Make It So’ competition (see Nova’s ‘Make It So’ Terms of Entry, attached). By entering the Competition, entrants warrant that their details (including personal information) and details of their idea/s may be made available to Nova. By entering the Competition, entrants also warrant that they have read, understand and agree to Nova’s ‘Make It So’ Terms of Entry (attached).
  • Ideas must be entered on www.makeitso.org.au
  • Every week a shortlist of the top 10 ideas will be based on votes from members of the public and advocates for the previous week
  • Votes can only be submitted online by viewing an idea and then rating it. The rating scale is from 1 -5
  • Ideas will be filtered by level of activity.
  • Ideas that have received any votes in the (given) week will each have their number of votes counted and only ideas with more than a median vote count are eligible.
  • After filtering the ideas for the more active ones as described above, ideas will be ranked on an average rating and the Top 10 list compiled.
  • To break any possible ties arising from ideas having the same average rating, two tie breakers are in place that are applied on a needs basis:
  • The first tie breaker is vote count; the idea with more votes in a given week wins.
  • If the first tie breaker fails to resolve a tie than idea’s age will be the second and final tie breaker. The more recent idea wins.
  • Advocates ratings are worth 3 public ratings. This is done by counting each advocate rating 3 times. E.g. “Jon Q Public” rates idea A as a 4, “Jane W Advocate” rates idea A as a 3, idea A now has a pool of votes consisting of ( 4, 3, 3, 3 ).
  • Following an idea is equivalent to rating the idea as a 5 twice. “Jon Q public” or “Jane W Advocate” follow idea B, idea B now has a a pool of votes consisting of ( 5, 5 )
  • For the purposes of determining each idea’s vote count and the population median vote count, the Advocates’ weighting of 3 will be in effect. i.e the Advocates’ weighting of 3 is taken into account in every element of this process.
  • The ideas with the Top 10 average rating that are eligible will be the Top 10
  • Engineers Australia will select the winning idea each week from the Top 10
  • Each weekly period will run from 4pm Wednesday – 3.59pm the following Wednesday
  • Winners will be announced on www.makeitso.org.au by 12pm Thursday each week
  • The prize Pool consists of 12 Asus Eee PC Netbooks valued at AU$399 on 02/02/2010
  • Ratings will be processed for each individual week only, and will not be cumulative for the minor competition.

Weekly Advocate Competition

  • A winner will be randomly selected from the Top 100 advocates that week. The random selection will be picked automatically with a computerised script
  • The Top 100 will be calculated on advocate activity. Each time an activity is performed it will receive points as follows:
  • Approve an idea 2pts
  • Report an idea 2pts
  • Tag an idea 1pt per tag
  • Rate an idea 1pt
  • Share an idea via email 3 pts
  • Share an idea via Facebook 3 pts
  • Share an idea via linked in 3 pts
  • Share an idea via twitter 3 pts
  • Comment on an idea 4 pts
  • Categorise an idea with a college (not a normal tag) 2pts
  • Advocates must be logged in for their activity to be counted
  • Each weekly period will run from 4pm Weds – 3.59pm the following Wednesday
  • Winners will be announced on www.makeitso.org.au by 12pm Thursday each week
  • The prize Pool consists of 12 Asus Eee PC Netbooks valued at AU$399 on 02/02/2010
  • Points will be for each individual week only, and will not be cumulative
