It began as a massive public awareness campaign in 2009, and has since become a major platform for Engineers Australia to promote and celebrate engineering.

At the core of Make it so was a competition inviting people to share their dreams and ideas. With thousands of entries and great support from the engineering profession, we are now making it so that engineers get the recognition they deserve.

  • Phase 1: Mobilising engineers

The first phase of the Make it so campaign was all about getting engineers to support and participate in the competition. More than 8,000 people signed up as advocates.

  • Phase 2: The Make it so competition

More than 7,000 people entered the competition. The range of ideas showed that the Australian public are concerned about big issues like renewable energy, climate change and water. It also showed that people see the engineering profession as playing a pivotal role in addressing these challenges.

  • Phase 3: Ongoing work

We are now collecting many stories that demonstrate engineers’ ongoing work in resolving the winning idea. Around the world, engineers are devising bio-fuel solutions that will “Make it so developing communities can re-use their agricultural waste to create energy for cooking and heating”. We want to celebrate this work.
